Brighton And Sussex University Hospitals is the only University Hospital in South-East of England (UK) and as a regional teaching hospital, works across two sites: the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath. BSUH serves a population of about 1.4 million people, with 6,500 births each year, increasing by 5%/year. The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital which is an award-winning Children’s Hospital and has a dedicated research wing supported by a clinical trials unit, including advanced laboratory and clinical investigation facilities. The new Brighton & Sussex Medical School has allowed the Trust to expand its programme of teaching, innovation and research including the establishment of a Chair in Paediatrics. Investment in the neonatal research unit has led to involvement in large international research initiatives in Maternity and Child health.

Institut National De La Sante Et De La Recherche Medicale

Founded in 1964, the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research (INSERM) is a public scientific and technological institute which operates under the joint authority of the French Ministry of Health and French Ministry of Research. INSERM consists of 327 research units, eighty percent of INSERM research units are embedded in research hospitals of French universities. For the NEOCIRC project, INSERM will work in a close relationship with University Paris V as well as the Public Hospitals of Paris (AP-HP). At the University of Paris V Professor Gerard Pons is head of the team ‘Drugs of the Central Nervous system in Paediatrics’, while at AP-HP, Professor Gerard Pons is Head of Paediatric Clinical Pharmacologist (Hospital Saint Vincent de Paul).

The Perinatal Neuro-epidemiology Unit is affiliated with two MHH Departments; Gynaecology/Obstetrics, and Paediatric Pulmonology/Neonatology. Members of the Perinatal Neuro-epidemiology Unit try to identify risk factors for neonatal brain damage using basic science as well as clinical/biomarker epidemiology tools. The goal is to contribute to the prevention of perinatal brain damage and its potential consequences physical and mental disabilities.

The Servicio Vasco de Salud, Osakidetza (OSA) or Basque Health Service, based in Spain, was created by the Health Planning Act of Euskadi, becoming a public entity within the Department of Health.

OSA consists of a network of hospitals and GP clinics, the Hospital Universitario de Cruces (HUC) and the research team based at the NICU and Research Unit in HUC, will be involved in the NEO-CIRC project. The research unit at HUC is a Clinical-Experimental Research Unit, with a Neonatal Epidemiology Unit leading clinical and epidemiological projects on prematurity, and an Experimental Unit performing work on physiopathology of neonatal cardiopulmonary disease and prevention of perinatal brain damage in different animal models.

HUC will be supported by the Fundación Vasca de Innovación e Investigación Sanitarias (BIOEF), created in 2003 by the Basque Country´s Health Department is a non-profit public organisation performing and supporting innovation and research in the Basque Health System.

Based in Northern Germany, the University Of Lubeck has a large University Hospital which is the lead centre of the German Neonatal Research Network (GNN), a large research network dedicated to the improvement of care for preterm infants with a birth weight below 1500 grams. The GNN currently runs a large multi-centre prospective trial on genetic polymorphisms in infants born prematurely. The GNN is headed by Prof. Göpel, who is a key member of the NEO-CIRC team, and  has already built up the infrastructure for collecting, storage, transport and analysis of cord samples for genetic studies.

The neonatal unit at Liverpool Women’s Hospital is one of the largest neonatal intensive care units in the UK with 18 intensive care cots. It is a teaching centre and has a very active research programme. Of the seven consultants, four have senior academic appointments. Current research interests are into tissue oxygen delivery, PK/PD, brain development, nutrition, respiratory care, parent relationships and education. The Unit has strong links with Alder Hey Children’s Hospital which is the base for the UK Medicines for Children Research Network.

MRI), palliative care, child psychiatry and psychosomatics, this study centre offers a perfect opportunity to bridge the gap between neonatal intensive care, research in the field of cerebral haemodynamics and oxygenation and long-term outcome studies. SERMAS is the legal representative of Hospital Universitario La Paz and delegates authority to Hospital’s General Director to manage research projects.

Part of SERMAS, La Paz University Hospital (La Paz University Hospital Biomedical Research Foundation), is the largest hospital in Spain in terms of beds, and the third in scientific production. Within the hospital structure there are a Research Unit with 17 laboratories (4 molecular biology labs, cell engineering, regenerative medicine, oncogenetics, congenital malformations, cerebrovascular diseases, among others), and 3 central labs (tissue cultures, sequentiation and immunohistochemistry). The number of original research published in 2008 was 756 with a global impact factor of 1,617.80 The hospital participates in a huge number of clinical trials The Department of Neonatology published 20 papers on original research in 2008 with a global impact factor of 29.207.The number of deliveries at the La Paz University Hospital during 2008 was 10,000.00 The Department of Neonatology holds 24 intensive care beds, and 50 intermediate care beds. The number of admissions below 32 wk per year is around 200. Neonatal, general and cardiac surgery is performed.

Gazi University Hospital Division of Newborn Medicine, NICU is a 25 bed NICU, based in Turkey. There are approximately 2000-2500 deliveries per year and 30-35 infants with BW < 1500 g are treated. The NICU is equipped with HFO ventilation, inhaled NO, CFM monitor, and cool cap device for selective head cooling. The unit also has NIRS (NIRO-200) monitor and microscan device to monitor microcirculation. GUSM is also part of Vermont-Oxford network and submit data on newborns with BW < 1500g regularly. The unit has an effective follow up programme where high risk newborns who graduate from NICU, together with paediatric neurologist and paediatric psychologist, are followed up and monitored.

Current research project measuring cerebral and peripheral oxygenation via NIRS, microcirculation with side stream dark field imaging, and CFM in newborns who receive inotropes for circulatory failure; project includes long term follow-up for neurological effects of inotropic support.

There are approximately 19,000 deliveries covered by the combined neonatal and maternal-fetal medicine networks, comprising about 25% of all Massachusetts births, which serve as the source for these admissions.

The clinical capabilities of the 41-bed Floating Hospital/Tufts-MC Neonatal ICU include full medical and surgical evaluation and management of critically ill, extremely premature to full-term infants. The Floating Hospital Neonatal ICU is fully equipped according to National standards for Level III intensive care, including cardio respiratory monitors with pulse oximetry, and invasive and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring. The NICU is supported by a full complement of paediatric and paediatric surgical subspecialists, including cardiologists, neurologists, medical geneticists, infectious diseases specialists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, ophthalmologists, cardiac surgeons, neurosurgeons, urologists and orthopaedic surgeons.
